IDEA StatiCa tutorial – Advance Steel link
Welcome to IDEA StatiCa tutorial. This tutorial will show how to activate and use the link between Advance Steel and IDEA StatiCa Connection.

- Install the latest version of IDEA StatiCa, get it in the Downloads
- Make sure you are using a supported version of Advance Steel – updates are published in the BIM section
After installation of both programs, run IDEA StatiCa and start with the item BIM. In the BIM wizard continue with the item Activate your BIM Link... During the process notification "Run as administrator" appears. Please confirm with the button Yes.
Select Advance design and click the button Install. The process of integration will start.
Open the attached project in Advance Steel.
We start with the typing command CONUI to the command line at the bottom of the window or into the 3D scene.
The Joint manager automatically appears. We proceed with the command ECEN to start the BIM import.
Now the whole joint has to be defined. The application tells us what to do at the bottom command line. In this step we have to choose the node which will be representing the node of the joint. The selection can be confirmed by spacebar.
In the next step the members have to be chosen. The first chosen member will be the bearing one.
In the last step we have to choose all other entities like plates, weld and bolts.
After the confirmation the IDEA StatiCa Connection window automatically appears.
3 Load effects
Automatic data transfer is finished and IDEA StatiCa Connection with the generated project is launched. All members, plates, welds, etc. were added automatically.
We have to add the load effects. Let’s use the right-click to the Load Effects and chose the New load.
Before the inputting the values we have to turn on the Loads in equilibrium. We have to input the values following the picture below.
We have to adjust the properties of the two top girders (Member 3 and 4). Let’s chose the Member 3 and set the parameter Forces in to the Bolts.
The same thing have to be defined to the Member 4.
We can calculate the analysis right in the Design tab by the Calculate command.
After a while, the results summary will appear at the left top corner of the 3D scene and the Overall check model view is set. We can quickly fine-tune the model in case we are not satisfied.
We will choose the Check tab and turn on the Equivalent stress, Bolt forces and Mesh model view. We can explore the detailed results for the Bolts also, let’s expand the results for the bolt B10.
At last, we go to the tab Report. IDEA StatiCa offers a fully customizable report to print out or save in editable format.
We can take an advantage of the Synchronize function. With this function, we can easily update an existing design of IDEA StatiCa Connection project exported from the Advance Steel. The originally defined Load effects are saved. For this function is crucial the link between the IDEA StatiCa project file and Advance Steel source file. We must not change the directory of the IDEA StatiCa project file or its name. We have to use the Save function only from the Project menu.
Code-check manager is a BIM tool to export and synchronize connections from other programs. It is launched directly in the 3rd party applications via a command/icon.
Synchronize - IDEA StatiCa detects changes in already imported entities (changes in thickness, changes in cross-section, modification of properties of welds, bolts, etc.) and updates the project in IDEA StatiCa Connection.
Modify - IDEA StatiCa imports the whole joint again with modified topology (different number of members, new entities, etc.).
Calculate - Synchronize and calculate current item and provide a new set of results.
Calculate all - Synchronize and calculate all items and provide new set of results.
Kindly be aware that IDEA StatiCa syncs with a model of the 3rd party application, not the other way around. If we add operations in IDEA StatiCa and then use the options described above (Synchronize; Modify; Calculate; Calculate all), the additionally added operations will be deleted.
After closing the project, we can see the item in the Code-check manager appears. The small preview picture and other information about the joint are provided. Also, the selected item is highlighted in the Advance Steel 3D presentation. We can close the Code-check manager window.
Let’s say we need to change some entity in the Advance Steel model. For example, the cross-section of the girder because it didn’t pass the code check. We change the cross section to the IPE 160.
We start the Code-check manager with the command CONUI again. Then chose the Synchronize command.
After a while, the IDEA StatiCa Connection project window appears (the selection of all entities was performed automatically in behind), the Load effects remains from the previously saved project and the cross-section of the Member 3 was updated to the IPE 160. We can perform the code-check analysis again.
Link now works for a wide variety of connection. However, please take into account yet unsupported functionality:
Holes in members and notches.
Workaround: Import the whole joint and manually add these in IDEA StatiCa Connection.
