IDEA StatiCa tutorial - Reinforced concrete T-section

Welcome to IDEA StatiCa tutorial. By following it step-by-step, you will learn how to design and code-check reinforced T section using IDEA StatiCa RCS.

1 New project

Let’s launch IDEA StatiCa, go to Concrete tab and select application RCS.

We create a new project by clicking Create a new project.

Next, we stay with the default general Eurocode setting and select reinforced Section type and beam as Member type.

2 Design

A new project is created and we input T cross-section and set its dimensions.

Next, let’s change the concrete grade to C30/37.

We continue in Design member and deactivate Carbonation in Member data tab.

Proceed to Internal forces where we input design values of internal forces

Let’s continue with the input of Reinforcement. The best option in cases of rectangular, T and I sections is to use a template. Adjust its properties according to the screenshot. Please notice that program automatically calculates the minimal required number of bars of proposed diameter and with an assumptions of effective depth “d” and lever arm “z”. Once we change diameter and click on recalculate, numbers will be adjusted to fit the checks. To respect detailing rules, we will introduce one bar on each side of web.

4 Check

To run the checks, just click Current. The fastest way to ensure everything is OK is to look at right side of the screen and check the summary of all the checks. In this example we see, that shear and interaction checks are not passing. This is a consequence of using exact calculation instead of assumptions for lever arm results.

Let’s go to Results to investigate detailed results of ULS and SLS checks. At first, we would like to resolve shear check in Shear tab. To improve the value of Shear check, we can try to change the angle diagonal strut (default angle for diagonal strut is set to 45 degrees). To do that, we click Strut optimization in the ribbon.

Program automatically finds the best angle of strut which increases the force in longitudinal bars and reduces forces in stirrups. Now, we can see that the angle of strut diagonal was changed to the 21.8 degrees and the check is passing.

And all checks are OK. We can go through all of them by switching the tabs.

5 Report

Finally, we go to the tab Report. IDEA StatiCa offers fully customizable report to print out or save in editable format.

We have designed, optimized and code-checked a reinforced T-section according to Eurocode.
